Job Success Story: Finding Work at a Hockey Game

About a month ago I met with a friend of mine who had decided to leave his job. I know, you are thinking that this guy must be crazy. Why would you leave your job in this tough economy? I met with him and helped him with his cover letter and resume, we came up with a strategy for how many places he would apply to a week and we researched places he should apply to. I also encouraged him to network and pass along his resume to all of his contacts and friends. He had worked in construction as a project manager for a few years so we wanted to focus on project management in a similar industry.

On Tuesday I got a phone call from my friend and all the hard work paid off because he got a job. He was only out of work for a few months and will now be working for New York Life. He attended a Carolina Hurricanes playoff game with a friend and that friend introduced him to a man from New York Life. They got to talking and the guy asked him to come in and interview for a sales position. The job was not one that my friend was looking for and he never considered financial planning but he was open to it. After going in for an interview he realized that the job was something he was very interested in and he will start next week.

So for those of you who are looking for jobs, be open to different industries. Also, financial planning is an area that is thriving so consider that field. Another company that I heard is hiring is Lowes Home Improvement. Remember to go out and meet with people. Go to a hockey game, or to the beach or any type of social event and tell your story. There might be someone there who needs help or can pass your name along to other people.
